Leaky Gut Update – Zonulin

Since 2013 as you may have noticed from my previous blog posts I have been suffering from leaky gut caused by the Klebsiella bacteria. Since then i have managed to clear the Klebsiella bacteria. But even then still something isnt a 100%. Usually on a daily basis i feel 85%, but something still isnt right with the other 15%, while keeping on a tight restrictive low histamine and clean diet for 3 years now. No sugar, processed foods for 3 years! Its tough but I have part of my life back.

I recently took a food intolerence test like I did in 2013, the original one that I posted. I had IGG allergy to 49/269 foods.  This time I took at test for 93 foods, and only 2 came back , 2+ cows milk, and 1+ on almonds, and tremendous improvement over 2013 result.

So food intolorance is a step up and looking good. Also my DAO and Histamine normalized over the 2013 result which im really pleased with. I have been able to tolerate aged meats more..

BUT HOWEVER……………………. The test for ZONULIN which tests the gut wall leakyness through blood test, the result went off the charts, so I still have inflammation of some sort showing there at the gut level. The aim now will be to further analyze stool test at a more detailed level to see if any other bacteria are lurking preventing the full healing.

The latest result:

Zonulin 90.0 ng/mL (But should be in range 20.0 – 48.0) ,

Diamine Oxidase 26.0 units/mL (Yes! mine falls under Low Incidence)

Ranges:
> 10U/ml – Low incidence of Histamine Intolorence
3.0 – 10U/ml Probable Histamine Intolerence
< 3.0U/ml High incidence of Histamine Intolorence

Histamine 43.0 ug/L ( Normal Range 28.0 – 51.0) Yes! its in the within range.

The Zonulin and Histamine tests were done through Nutripath in Australia through a practitioner.

So what we have is:

  • Eliminate Klebsiella – Check
  • Eliminate/Reduce Food Intolerance – Check
  • Eliminate/Reduce Histamine Intolerence – Check
  • Bring Leaky Gut back to normal within range – something to work on still

Also i am keeping on an anti-inflammatory diet, as im still inflamed due to the high zonulin, but its a work in progress!

Long journey for the past 3-4 years I only hope it gets better, will keep you updated!

How much damage can gut bacteria do?

As you know from my previous posts the damage done from the klebsiella gut bacteria is not instant, but it is there silent and slowly killing you and your health and you have no idea what is going on (same as other bad gut bacterias), and no doctor willing to help you , simply saying you are fine by your blood results until you go see a alternative medicine practitioner.  I was eating and eating , but my weight was dropping and had no idea what was going on until i saw a naturopath. Here below is my weight/fat/ levels since when this started in December 2013 to go for the worst, but I estimate the bacteria was present since March 2013 when I went to Fiji and got some food poisoning, and slowly its been doing gut damage until it went for the worst by December 2013.

The Aim is to get to the Ideal range:
Ideal Weight: 77.40KG
Ideal Fat Mass: 13.16kg
Ideal Active Tissue Mass: 39.47

12th December 2013: (Initial Appointment with Naturopath)
Weight: 76.10kg
Fat Mass: 12.40kg
Active Tissue Mass: 35.21kg

19th December 2013: (2nd appointment within 1 week later I dropped almost 2kg in weight, and decrease of muscle mass)

Weight: 74.90kg
Fat Mass: 12.54kg
Active Tissue Mass: 34.41kg

9th January 2014: ( I lost another 2kg of weight 3 weeks later no idea what bacteria was causing it, until the CDSA came back, i was eating 1kg of meat per day but weight was dropping)
Weight: 72.80kg
Fat Mass: 11.07kg
Active Tissue Mass: 33.95kg

3rd February 2014:(This was when i started taking golden seal to kill off the bacteria, weight started picking up, probably killing the pathogens and i was able to absorb more nutrients)
Weight: 73.60kg
Fat Mass: 10.96kg
Active Tissue Mass: 34.30kg

3rd March 2014:
Weight: 73.10kg
Fat Mass: 10.48kg
Active Tissue Mass: 34.73kg

3rd April 2014:
Weight: 74.70kg
Fat Mass: 11.06kg
Active Tissue Mass: 35.45kg

17th April 2014:
Weight: 75.30kg
Fat Mass: 12.11kg
Active Tissue Mass: 34.98kg

30th May 2014: (When i started to take bactrex by Metagenics, noticed dramatic improvement in absorption rate of nutrients, probably killing off klebsiella, and ended up gaining 1kg of muscle, probably due to the large amount of steak i was eating)
Weight: 76.20kg
Fat Mass: 12.95kg
Active Tissue Mass: 36.00kg

1st July 2014: (achieved perfect fat mass, increase 3kg weight, thanks metagenics bactrex)
Weight: 79.20kg
Fat Mass: 13.37kg
Active Tissue Mass: 36.72kg

8th August 2014: (Good results again)
Weight: 81.10kg
Fat Mass: 14.72kg
Active Tissue Mass: 36.81kg

28th August 2014: (Good results again)
Weight: 81.00kg (above ideal)
Fat Mass: 14.82kg (above ideal)
Active Tissue Mass: 36.98kg (getting close to ideal 39.47kg)

Leaky Gut Update #9

Hello, well I’m up to leaky gut update 9 already.. and I do have some good and bad news. The good news is that I have managed to keep my weight steady at 80/81kg and it has not been dropping, also my fat mass has increased and also muscle mass probably due to the organic grass fed steak and chicken I was eating. I had such a large appetite for meat to eat 2 steaks and 500g chicken breast within 2 days. The other good news is that i redid the allergy IGG food sensitivity tests again through healthscope , although its cheaper, not as comprehensive as Imupro but still gives a good view to about 100 foods and reactivity. Well the reactivity has really dropped compared to the Imupro test I did in Dec 2013, no more allergy to carrot, leek, ginger, orange etc etc. My allergy to Cows Milk has dropped from 4+ to 3+, Egg White 4+ to 3+. No allergy to Goats or Sheeps Milk either, all the allergy markers are dropping which means i can eat everything again over time!! Yay!! This also means that the Gut is actually healing.. and I’m making good progress..

Now for the bad news.. it seems I have in my opinion developed in the last 2 weeks or so very low tolerance of histamine levels in food especially protein meat. Now i cannot eat anymore chicken or steak, or fish, as I get a headache and a feeling of unable to breathe and in my opinion I believe I’ve become highly sensitive to meat histamines even tho on my latest report I have no allergy. I don’t even have to swallow the fish for example, i just chew it in my mouth and i pickup something and makes me like i cannot breathe, bit weird and freaky?
So in the mean time I have had to rely on organic brown rice protein powder to try give me some of the protein I’m missing from meat, as well as use nuts and seeds, however I don’t feel as strong compared to when I was eating meat. I read many articles online and histamine symptoms and all mine seemed to match and I’m a bit concerned why all of a sudden its an issue, I did have a low histamine DAO reading on my imupro test in december 2013 however, maybe i have pushed my limit with the amount of meat I was eating. Now I’m wondering what is going on and I will re-do the histamine blood test to confirm if its a histamine problem. I really hope I can eat meat again as neither the doctor or naturopath is quite sure what is going on with that, considering I’m improving on my other results.
I also did some other blood tests for B12 and Folate levels, and they came back good, however my Vitamin D was a bit on the low side so will take a supplement and recommendation to spend 20mins outside in sun per day. I am also waiting on my new CDSA test to come back to determine whether the bacteria klebsiella is still present, or not and I’m hoping its Dead, killed, destroyed as it has caused me so much grief like I have never had in my whole life and doing so much damage to my gut function. So CDSA and Histamine tests to come back and will see how things go. Im hoping by next time i write Leaky Gut Update #10, klebsiella is gone and I can tolerate meat again.
